The Magpies have been on the lookout for a new goalkeeper and first targeted James Trafford. However, the 22-year-old has since re-joined Manchester City from Burnley.
Newcastle switched their attention to Ramsdale and had been in talks with Southampton and the player’s camp about a possible summer move to St James’ Park.
According to The Athletic, an agreement has been reached between Newcastle and Southampton for Ramsdale to join the club on loan with an option to buy.
he 27-year-old former Arsenal shot-stopper has been granted permission to travel to the North East for a medical and finalize the transfer. The loan is said to include a ‘sizeable’ fee.
Ramsdale signed for Southampton last summer and endured a difficult first campaign on the South Coast, keeping just three clean sheets in 30 appearances. But Howe is keen to reunite with the England international, having worked with him during their time together at Bournemouth.
Speaking about his future earlier this year, Ramsdale said: “I could be here, I could be abroad, I could be on a different team. I’m 26, I want to play football, and if that means moving or staying to fulfil my dreams, then that would be it.
“This summer, I might get sold, or I might still be here. This season was all about playing. Ultimately, there wasn’t a plethora of clubs at the time [last summer] to have my pick from.”
Newcastle’s move for Ramsdale could signal the departure of first-choice ‘keeper Nick Pope.
